Memories of Mom on this May Day

Posted by on

Our Moms. Our heart and soul. Our history. Our Memories.

Looking through pattern books at Denholm's Department, Weekly Readers and a trip to the tiny Post Office on Southport by the bridge, long afternoons spent at the saltwater pool at Newagen with cousins and the "Pool Princess." "Adventures" in the boat with sister Amy, headed up the Damariscotta to hunt for hermit crabs. Boat rides to "town" to shop at Boothbay Fruit, long summer days on Southport with endless play in the cove. Seaweed stew. Trips up the Sheepscot for a "Make your own Sundae".

Mom catching me reading "Anne of Green Gables" till the wee hours with a flash light. Trips to the Natick Mall after school with my sister. Moving, moving, moving. A new house every four years, Time to re-decoate again! Re-arranging, Amy and I would switch rooms on a Saturday. All is new again.

Skiing at Tyrol and Black mountain, EVERY weekend and vacation all my growing years. The ski lodge in Conway and all the hilarities living and sharing with family friends. Triple bunks times two. Boys room, girls room. Hard cider explodes all over the closet into the bunk room.

Moving to Maine. Best idea ever. A horse, a cat, two ducks and a Ross ten speed. Summers on Southport. Two week cruises to Northeast Harbor and back. Stuck at the opened Bath Bridge in a Volkswagen Beetle in 90 degree weather with a cat in the car headed to Southport, windows closed.

Christmas. Presents that took all day to open. Skis standing tall behind the tree, Madame Alexander dolls in the pretty blue and pink box. Presents, presents, presents...

Wedding at South Congo and reception at the Nonantum, live band and open bar. First grandchild, Martha Malt Hutchins. Not one, not two, but three Liberty of London dress brought from England.

The End. Dad's Alzheimer's and her cancer. "I wouldn't even know I had cancer if my legs didn't hurt so much." (from the lung to the bones). Telling my sister to go buy her a Raggedy Andy Doll. And I quote, "I want a man to sleep with at night who has a smile on his face and says I love you."

May 14, 2012. Memories.
